[ add comment ]Lily's due date
August 31, 2004, 8:22 am
Today is the famous due date--August 31st. The date I counted down to in the end. I think doctors should give expecting women a "due range" such as August 25-September 7th. So many women are "late" and become so frustrated. But my two babies came 16 and 15 days before their due dates. I have to admit that with Lily I expected her to be a bit early. I tried to tell myself she could be a September baby, but I never really believed it. Then my OB started telling me at 36 weeks that I would have the baby any day and that the baby would be a girl. I said, "What does she know?" I still don't know how she guessed both things correctly.
So on this very important date we are taking Lily to the Dr. for her 2 week appointment. Thank God I'm no longer pregnant.[ 2 comments ] ( 22 views )
First bath
August 30, 2004, 11:36 am
Lily had her first bath yesterday. I waited until she was good and hungry so that we could bathe her and then I would feed her. I figured she would cry...But Lily didn't cry at all. She seems to take things in stride. She looked at herself in the mirror the entire bath. She was fascinated with her own image. Who can blame her? She's a beautiful baby.
Noah screamed during his first bath. I was traumatized and never wanted to bathe him. He grew to love bathing, but I'll always remember those first months of terror.
Already there are differences in my children, and I find it fascinating. It's so interesting to see a child's personality develop....[ 1 comment ] ( 19 views )
Friendly Noah

I know this is supposed to be the "Lily Log", but let's face it--it's really about Noah and Lily.Lately I have come to the realization that my 3-year-old son reminds me of my 63-year-old father. It's frightening really. Genetics is a strange thing--your son can remind you of your brother-in-law and father all at once.
Noah is very friendly like my Dad. When you go places with my Dad he seems to talk to everyone. On walks he strikes up conversations with strangers. He is always leaning over his fence talking to the neighbors. He's a likeable, talkative guy.
About a week ago I was doing dishes, and I noticed Noah going out back. He yelled, "Hey there!" to our neighbor and walked over to the fence. I saw them talking. I realized that a little Bill Hottman lives in my house. It kills me...[ 5 comments ] ( 33 views )
Big brother
August 25, 2004, 7:47 am
Everyone asks how Noah is getting along with Lily. And when we are out they ask Noah what he thinks of his little sister. This question just annoys a 3-year-old boy. He really has no answer to this question, so if you see him don't ask him that. You can ask him her name to which he will respond with enthusiasm, "LilyStarr!" (He says it like it's one word). But Noah is a great big brother. He isn't obsessed with Lily. He doesn't follow me around and watch me feed her or change her diaper. He asks about 1-2x/day if he can hold her. He gets excited when she opens her eyes. And sometimes we catch him holding her hand and talking to her. He tells her that she has small hands.
My favorite moment was when we first got home from the hospital and Noah decided to entertain me and Lily while I nursed her by playing guitar...

August 20, 2004, 10:26 pm
After spending two days home with a 3 year old and a newborn, I've found that each one has their advantages.Advantages to the newborn:
1. Sleep all day
2. Require no discipline
3. Can't talk
4. Smell really good
5. Need no entertainment
Advantages to the toddler:
1. Sleep all night
2. Can help out (get diapers, etc.)
3. Potty trained
4. Give hugs and kisses
5. Take long afternoon naps
So combining a newborn and toddler means that potentially you can be up all day and night. Thank goodness for Nathan's paternity leave...[ 2 comments ] ( 17 views )
First night home
August 19, 2004, 10:02 am
Lily is a little over 2 days old now. When we were discharged from the hospital yesterday the nurse said that she isn't a "new" baby anymore, but she still seems pretty new to us.I've forgotten some things about new babies. They spit up A LOT. Or maybe that's just our babies. I was spit up on 3 times in the night last night. I changed my shirt as much as I changed Lily's outfit. So I'm doing laundry now.
I didn't think that this baby would look like Noah as a baby, so every time I go to pick Lily up it takes me back. I feel like I've gone back in time 3 years, and I'm picking up my baby boy.
