Lily, the critic

Lily is very observant and verbal. We have to tell her not to comment on people's appearance and hurt their feelings. I explained to her that if someone is dressed differently or is very short or tall then she shouldn't say anything until later when we're alone.Today we went shopping at Target, and an overweight woman passed us. I saw Lily looking at her and thinking, but instead of commenting in a negative way she said, "Mom, your bottom isn't that big. Really it's pretty small." I chuckled at the thoughts that were going through her mind.
I took Lily into the changing room with me. She was very helpful. I put on a pair of capris and she said, "Oh, no no. Not good. Don't get those" and gave a sweet little apologetic smile. Then I tried on some pants that were too long, and she said, "Nope. Not good, but maybe you can grow a little and we'll come back and get them." Then I tried on a dress, and she was incredibly complimentary and encouraged me to buy the dress. I think I'll take her with me from here on out...

Whenever we go out of town without Papa, he surprises us with home improvements. After a week spent in Kansas, we came home to a very clean house and a very pink room. Papa painted Lily's room pink complete with pink Dora curtains. She was so excited and giggly and can't wait to show her friends her new room.

When Nathan and I got married, we adopted our first baby, Sammy. Sam was an easy dog to love, and we still miss the old girl (and talk for her even from the grave). When Sam was 6 we adopted our 2nd baby, Jack. Jack has been a difficult dog from the start. He likes to mark things, nip children, and roll in anything that smells disgusting. Jack is now almost 10 years old.In his old age Jack has really mellowed. Most of the time we don't even notice he's here. About a month ago Nathan decided to take Lily and Jack on a hike in the woods. He let Jack explore off his leash, and Jack developed a deep love for his alpha, Nathan. He even started calling Nathan "Nate" and Nathan gave Jack the name J-Dogg.
Nathan left for work a few days ago and said good-bye to his buddy, and Lily said, "Hey, Papa and Jack talk to each other now! They're buddies!"
Of course now we fear that Jack will die now that we all are quite smitten with him. Nate and J-Dogg go for hikes in the woods every Sunday, and Jack comes home happy and exhausted.
Today we all went for a long hike, and I loved seeing Jack's happy trot through the woods. He's fast asleep right now...
