Good Friends

Lily learned what makes a good friend the hard way this month. A few weeks ago we found out from Lily's teacher, Mrs. Thomsen, that Lily was being bullied at school by a girl in her class. She even came home with some scratches, so I met with her teacher and the principal to work out the problem. We believe that the situation is under control now, and in the process Nathan and I have talked to Lily many times about what makes a good friend.I used examples of the wonderful friends that I have who treat me with respect and truly want me to be happy and successful. Lily made us proud by reaching out to friends in her class who are nice to her. I also reached out to friends to help with the situation, and I received such great support and advice.
So this weekend I planned a Girls' Day with Melissa and Sophie. Sophie is in 2nd grade, and Lily really looks up to her. We had a wonderful day going out to eat, painting pottery, and even stopping at Starbucks (maybe that was more the Moms' idea).
Then on Sunday, Lily had her friends Kylie and Kennedy over for an indoor picnic and playdate. The girls were soooo excited for their picnic and then played like they were monkeys and princesses (typical). Lily had an uplifting weekend with good friends.
Thanks for all the support, friends![ 4 comments ] ( 22 views )

Last summer Noah was picked for an All Star baseball team. We spent the following weekends cheering on Noah and his friends at baseball tournaments. In the process, we got to know the parents, grandparents, and siblings of the players.Mike and Sherri Katula, Raymond's parents, volunteered to coach a Jr. Rams basketball team this winter (bless them). Many of the players were on the baseball team from last summer, so we had a great time cheering the boys on this winter.
This weekend they competed in a tournament in Carbon Cliff. The boys lost their first game but then turned it around and won the next two games. The games were so exciting that I nearly lost my voice cheering the boys on. I love watching the boys play well after so many practices and games.
The boys placed 3rd in the tournament and every player, parent, and grandparent had a big smile on their face!
Pre-game planning:
Noah is player #1:
Time-out huddle:
3rd Grade Jr. Rams!
I absolutely love this picture--especially Sherri on the right!

Last month Noah brought home a flier from school about the spelling bee. I asked Noah is he was interested in trying out for the spelling be and he replied, "No way!" The next week he came hom with a note that he had qualified for the spelling bee. I asked Noah why he changed his mind and he said, "My teacher made me compete for the spelling bee."I was immediately nervous for Noah and the thought of him standing alone on a stage spelling words. Noah said he was ok with going to the spelling bee. We practiced on some words before the big night.
On the night of the bee, Noah had fun running around with his fellow 3rd grade spellers: Emmalyn, Carter, Daniel, and Tyler. Noah was excited that he got a ribbon just for qualifying:

Noah was the 8th speller to walk to the microphone and spell a word. He was the first 3rd grader. His word was Casserole. He stood very confidently and answered loud and clear. We were very proud of him.
Noah spelled his word casseroll. After the spelling bee he asked me, "What is a casserole, Mom?" I was a very proud dietitian Mama...[ 5 comments ] ( 23 views )
